The importance of Irrigation Scheduling
Share

Irrigation scheduling is one of the most important aspects of successful crop production. Knowing when and how much to water your crops can make or break your harvest. That’s why it’s important to understand the principles of irrigation scheduling and how it affects your crops.

When it comes to irrigation scheduling, there are a few key concepts to understand. First, it’s important to know the saturation, field capacity, and wilting point of your soil. Saturation is the point at which the soil is completely saturated with water, and it’s the highest level of water the soil can hold. Field capacity is the amount of water the soil can hold after it has been saturated and allowed to drain. Finally, the wilting point is the level of water in the soil at which the plant’s roots can no longer absorb water and the plant begins to wilt.

The soil texture, porosity, and permeability also play an important role in irrigation scheduling. Soil texture is the size of the particles in the soil. Soils with larger particles tend to have better porosity, which is the ability of the soil to absorb and hold water. Permeability is the ability of the soil to allow water to pass through it.

By understanding the saturation, field capacity, wilting point, soil texture, porosity, and permeability of your soil, you can develop an effective irrigation schedule that will help ensure your crops get the water they need to thrive. This is especially important in areas that experience droughts or periods of low rainfall. With proper irrigation scheduling, you can ensure your crops are getting the moisture they need to stay healthy and productive.

The differentiating factor of the successful modern-day farmer is their ability to implement precision measuring tools in their farming practice.

With so many factors to consider, irrigating your field for optimal crop and water performance is a daunting task.

In-field devices tend to be difficult to operate, and provide information only from a single location, missing the bigger picture.
